Abstract

Thais paper aims to approach the food security situation of the different communities
in the Department of Cauca, where the situation is even more complex than in the rest of the
country. The economic and social situation is manifested in low development possibilities,
marked food dependence, the majority consumption of foods of low nutritional value,
mobility in illicit crops, worrying school dropout rates accompanied by poor academic
performance, low physical and intellectual development, migration and low quality of life,
malnutrition and, consequently, higher incidence and prevalence rates of morbidity and
mortality.
The Department of Cauca is located in the range of food and nutritionally insecure
regions of Colombia, with 58.9% of households in its Pacific coast and 47.7% in the Andean
zone located in this category. Chronic malnutrition affecting 13.5% (18,671) of children aged
0 to 4 years, 14.5% of children aged 5 to 9 years (21,837), and 21% of those aged 10 to 17
years (43,623), is the most visible direct consequence of this situation. (National
Administrative Department of Statistics DANE, 2018), it is for this reason that strategies
must be implemented where both food insecurity and the environmental effects brought about
by food waste are reduced.
