Abstract

Confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic has adverse psychological effects on the
population. This study examines the case of university students, who have seen their quality
of life and academic performance decline due to the new situation. New teaching
methodologies or uncertainty regarding the evaluation process are some of the reasons that
increase the level of stress among these young people.
Using the academic stress questionnaire SISCO this study identifies the level of stress of the
students, the aspects of the environment that act as stressors and the coping strategies
employed. By means of a survey spread in virtual platforms, 1,628 answers were collected
from the different grades of the University of Zaragoza. If 38% indicated to have had high
levels of stress during the beginning of the academic year, this percentage rises to 87% if
only the time of confinement is considered. The academic overload, the exams, the lack of
time for academic activities are, in that order, the elements that most concern them. The
physical manifestations are diverse, problems of concentration (81%), upheavals of dream
(74%) and laziness in the work (73%) are the most habitual. On the other hand, the students
who have sensation of anguish, feel sad and depressed and those who have experienced some
type of eating disorder during the months of confinement increase notably.
